Values

What we are for.

A magazine of record owes its readers a statement of aims, made once, in plain language. These are the masthead's. They are stated here so you can hold our coverage against them.

Three goals
1. Fix Democracy — so power and benefits are decentralized.
Democracy is the operating system of the public economic domain. Where its power has pooled — in captured institutions, in money's reach over rules, in decisions made far from the people who live with them — it is drawing down the stocks of trust and self-governance. We cover what concentrates that power and what returns it.
2. Fix Capitalism — so power and benefits are decentralized.
Markets, prices, enterprise, and investment are machinery, and the machinery works. The extractive logic it has been pointed at does not. Where ownership, gains, and decisions have concentrated, the machinery serves the drawdown. We cover the operators and the capital pointing it the other way.
3. Restore the Commons — so what belongs to everyone is governed by everyone.
A century of argument between state and market erased a third mode of governance that predates both: communities managing shared stocks directly, with rules they set and enforce themselves. It works, it is documented, and it is the oldest regenerative institution on record. We cover the commons as economics, not nostalgia.
A note on these aimsThese are the masthead's aims, not a test our writers must pass. Guest authors in these pages do not have to share them. They have to meet the standard of evidence in our charter. The pages carry the argument.
